Libranet, icewm & nautilus: windows-like desktop for low power machines
Libranet is a debian based distribution and seems to run nicely on low power machines. It uses nautilus and icewm to provide a very windows-like desktop. It is fully compatible with Debian. One essential tweak was to use the atftpd tftp daemon. All of Cave Hill School runs via ltsp on Libranet. I will add any tweaks here I can find in my notes. /One caution--in the last week the maintainer updated gdm and lost all of the configuration files ..More later..
Installing LTSP 4.1 in Libranet 2.8.1 (upgraded to Debian 3.1)
Note: Because of recently discovered incompatilibities between Libranet 2.8.1 and Debian 3.1, Libranet can no longer be upgraded to Debian Sarge -- the Realtek-8139 module will not load! It is suggested that you either use Libranet 2.8.1 without an upgrade, or follow the newly included generic instructions for the installation of Libranet 3.0 or Debian 3.1 (Note added 31 Oct 2005)
I have recently written a
detailed How-To for installing LTSP in Libranet 2.8.1. The directions offer two options for the LTSP workstations: booting from either the floppy drive or the hard drive. Two versions are available for each: one requires a server which is already running; in the other the workstation starts the server from its (the workstations's) logon script. In either version, the server can be shutdown from the workstation computer.
Note: 9 April 2007. Although the Libranet Forum has closed, the Libranet Forum Archives are still available. My How-To is now located at:

Another alternative is my recent revision of the above document which is specific to Debian 3.1 (Sarge), found at:
